Born in Burkburnett, Texas, Smith competed in bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and steer wrestling. In 1945, he competed in his first major rodeo in Fort Worth, Texas.

He was among the top money winners at all major rodeos from 1949-1966.
